What is a Free Business?

A free business is what you get when you have an open business using free means of production and open knowledge to produce free products&services in exchange of free payments.

As for any free cultural work, a pure free business can be freely studied, applied, copied and/or modified, by anyone, for any purpose. Nonetheless, a pure free business is, for now at least, a purely theoretical concept[1]. In practice, there can be a wide spectrum of freeness and openness among free culture producers. This definition is not intended to be restrictive.

Why a Free Business?

It is by far the best business model for the economy of free, because:

  • Openness is the only model in this age of total transparency.
  • Transparency maximizes revenues one can get with the free payment model.
  • Free means of production and open knowledge because it minimizes production cost.

All other things being equal, more a business is free, better are its chances of success in an economy of free.
